A little while ago I was invited to do a limited-edition print for the new Tomb Raider release along with super talent power-houses Victo Ngai Corinne Reid Illustration, Rich Pellegrino, Sam Wolfe Connelly and Logan Everett Faerber.
Screen prints and originals will be available at pop up stores in NYC and SF.

Umm is this for real?
Assimilation actually takes 3 generations
The first generation suffers a tremendous amount of alienation
Second generation is known as being the bilingual generation which holds a bit of the original culture yet is able to be a part of American society
At the point of the third generation, all language is usually lost and assimilation is complete
You think it’s just so easy to come from another nation? Be my guest. Try to go somewhere and avoid people with a similar background as you. Try having nobody there for you in the toughest of times.
For myself, being a second generation and having parents who don’t speak a shred of English is a constant struggle to them. It pains me to see them have to look ashamed and needing me to translate for them. They are lost and feel hopeless sometimes. The last thing I need to see is some ignorant elitist apathetic uninformed person making the assumption that assimilation is just something you can just “do”.
I highly recommend you to do some more research on being bilingual, personally it is the best thing it connects two worlds. I have no trouble vocalizing my thoughts in either languages. I don’t speak “Spanglish” and it doesn’t make me less educated if that is what you mean by “success”. Quite the contrary, learning multiple languages in fact makes you smarter; it aids exercising the brain in memory and allows access to more dynamics in organizing your thoughts.
Spanish is my primary language and I’m proud of my parents for giving me the blessing to have both a Hispanic culture background with an American life. I graduated high school and am attending college at the moment. I have never had any trouble with English regardless of speaking Spanish at home. Sure I may not be a genius, but there are others who have had the same luxury of having immigrant parents who have far surpassed what is believed to be “success”.
